Sunday last was a sad day for the club as Padraig Owens NT, one of the heroes of the clubs
first Championship win in 1956, was laid to rest. He is fondly remembered for scoring the
match winning goal in the final.
Over the years while living and teaching in neighbouring Curry, he always kept in touch
with his native club. When indoor hurling was first introduced in Tourlestrane, Padraig
donated a shield for our parish competitions played in Banada Abbey Hall. Fittingly it was
named the 1956 Team Shield.
On Sunday, Padraig’s coffin was draped in Tourlestrane’s colours and the actual match ball
from the final was used as an offertory gift during mass. Club members participated in a
huge guard of honour with pupils from Curry National School, members of INTO, Cumann
mNa Bunscol, Curry GAA Club, South Sligo Anglers, and the local Gun Club. The club
would like to extend sincere sympathy to his wife Margaret, sons Finbar, Ronan and
Darragh and also to his mother, brothers, nieces, and nephews.
